TOUGH GOING FOR BODIAM BATSMEN

Bodiam 106-9                   W.G. Gracefully 110-6

Bodiam finally kicked off their 2012 campaign with a hastily arranged 40 over fixture in Isfield. With a slow wicket and long grass in the outfield, runs were always going to be at a premium. This was proved when Bodiam, having elected to bat, only managed less than 3 an over for most of their innings. Graham Bransby (25) showed most patience but the turning point was the run out of Richard Reardon (18) just when a partnership with Paul Barnett (9) was developing. Only Mark Dixon (13) of the lower order managed to get the ball off the square. The bowlers all had a good day with M Fellows (4-17) being the pick.

What should have been a comfortable target, was made all the more difficult by some fine opening bowling. Reardon (1-12) took an early caught and bowled and his partner Barnett (1-11) restricted WG in their allotted 8 overs each. S Halsey (28) took a shine to Tony Wilson (2-30) on his introduction and dispatched his first over for 14 which immediately redressed the balance. However the wily Wilson then bowled his next 7 overs for only 16 runs, but Bodiam could not make enough breakthroughs to quite turn the game in their favour. Despite an unbelievable full length diving catch by Robin Ufton which defied his years, eyesight and the laws of physics, WG reached their target with

15 balls to spare, L Atkinson seeing them over the line with an undefeated 16.
